Sewing May 9 2009

Filed under: fabric, lifestyle — Amber Sjomeling @ 6:27 PM

I have been sewing for many years now.  I am not an expert, i can do well when something is for me.  My family has a long history of procrastination and not finishing things we start.  I try to curtail this, but i currently have two dresses i need to finish.  To be fair, i have moved twice.  All the tiny little patchwork squares were lost.  Which is a shame because the fabric is so lovely.  If i had known this was going to happen, i would have made something else out of them.  But it really was going to be lovely. I usually make purses.  I have rarely made anything from a pattern.  I view this as both a good and a bad thing.  I need to learn how to read patterns, and someday..how to make my own.  I have made a lot of purses in the same initial style that it would have been great to have a pattern.

To the right is a picture of the last dress i made.  Dresses are hard for me but, what you have to remember is, i am actually designg all the sewing projects i put on this blog.  This is unfinished and notthe best lit picture.  The fuschia is much brighter in actual light and the solid color is a rich charcol.  But what i do love about this design is the colors.  The only thing i really wanted to do to this now is redo the straps and finish the back with some nice pleats.

The problem with all of these unfinished projects, including the ones in my head is that i have no space to work on all of this stuff, and worse yet, not the right fabric i need for many of my ideas.  As i mentioned above, i want to learn how to make patterns.  Well if i don’t find some space where am i going to organize these things.  I guess i will be investing in manila envelopes.

We have two spacious rooms in the upstairs of the duplex i live in to do what ever i please.  I am seriously considering taking one over for an office/sewing room.  I only have like 3 totes of fabric and my sewing machine to keep there.  The problem is the floors are really dirty.  The whole floor is really dirty and i don’t think there is light.  Every time i have every been up there it was super dark and i couldn’t find the light.  My desk i would put up there is also currently being used for a dj table in our living room.  I’d have to collect that as well.  I wonder if my room mates would care, i doubt it.  In fact once Kyle goes back to school i am sure he would love to have an office area.  In unrelated news, we also need to set up a hookah lounge up there as well.

Either way, next weekend when i go home i will be picking up my sewing machine and fabric.  There are many holes to patch, purses to create and who knows…maybe a dress to finish.

Kinetic Typography Project Rough

Kinetic Typography Project Rough

This is my first rough for my kinetic typography project.  Kinetic Typography is when one creates a video with audio of a song or movie clip and has the type come on screen.  This playlist has some of the best examples on youtube. This is my first major assignment for my motion graphics class.  It’s a bit scary, but i am really excited about this.  If you don’t recognize the words it is the meow scene from Super Troopers where Foster is bet he can’t say meow ten times to someone they pulled over. It’s a great scene and the repetition of the word meow makes it great for this project.  Any suggestions or critiques?

I really love the theme i am using for this blog.  It is really well designed and pretty trendy.  I do have some issues with the sidebar though.  I think something is really messed up with the padding.  Is this just my browser? i am going to test it out at school tomorrow.  But on my screen my categories cloud and archives are lined right up next to the left edge of the green bubble.  My avatar is also located really weird.  I don’t like it and as a designer it really bothers me.  I really like that this theme comes with an RSS feed subscription button installed, but i think it’s in a really inconvenient spot at the bottom of the page.  RSS subscription buttons should be prominent and easy to find for users, not hidden at the bottom of the page below everything where a user may not notice it.  These are only small issues (that really bother me) in an over all great theme!

I am not completely new to the wordpress community, but this is my first blog under my own name.  I was inspired to create this earlier tonight after viewing a different design blog and thought it was a good idea.  I am a web design student in Minneapolis currently and will be posting about college life and stress but mostly my current design projects and side projects.   I am very open to constructive criticism and will rarely moderate comments.  Please leave me your honest thoughts constructively.
